Bulk Commodities: Case in Point

Global Home Improvement Retailer Needs Atlanta Rail warehouse for Lumber Transloading

The Challenge

A multi-national Home Improvement retailer with lumber suppliers scattered across the Southeastern United States needed a centralized rail warehouse in Atlanta GA to forward stock hurricane supplies on a federal government contract. They approached Porter Logistics to serve as the rail-served bulk commodity warehouse in Atlanta - they would require both boxcar unloading for plywood that could not be exposed to the elements as well as center beam unloading outside for covered wood that would need outside storage space.

FAQ

We offer full warehousing & distribution services which could include import, export, devanning and palletizing of floor-loaded containers among many other general warehousing services like transloading, cross-docking, and reverse logistics

Porter Logistics also offers order fulfillment services across channels meaning we can unite brick and mortar + eCommerce orders and send to both businesses and direct to consumer’s homes

We also provide value added services like kitting, repacking, custom labeling, and reverse logistics

Finally, we also offer Atlanta bulk commodity warehouse services across a diverse set of industries including but not limited to consumer products, retail, Food & Beverage, HAZMAT, Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and others

  • Because we service a diverse set of industries, we also have a diverse set of capabilities not found in most general warehousing partners such as:
  • Direct rail access
  • Temperature controlled rooms (cooled & heated)
  • Software we’ve developed in-house for greater efficiencies
  • Flame rooms with foam suppression systems
  • GMP certified facilities as certified by both the US Food & Drug administration (FDA) as well as the American Institute of Baking (AIB)

We run a tight ship and possess a “swiss army knife” of capabilities needed to properly execute the needs of an Omnichannel supply chain

If it was as simple as posting blanket pricing on our website, we would! But unfortunately, pricing can vary due to the following factors:

  • Length of contract
  • Type of commodity
  • Value added services (e.g., kitting, repacking)
  • Storage & Handling Volumes
  • Seasonality of your business
  • Specialized equipment provided
  • Product value and liability
  • Payment terms
  • Specialized features provided (e.g., temp control) and more!

Fill out the form on our website, call us at 404-574-464, or email us at sales@porter-logistics for quote – we’ve done this quite a bit and can zero in on costs pretty quickly

We service manufacturers, retailers, brands, and direct sellers from a diverse set of industries including but not limited to:

  • Consumer  / Retail products
  • Hazmat + Chemical + Other Regulated Goods
  • Food & Beverage
  • General manufacturing
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Beauty
  • And more

Our clients range from Fortune 10, among the largest organizations in the world, with 10,000+ allocated pallet spaces to smaller privately held companies with 200 pallets on hand. We’re open to hearing a growth story, but generally we’re not a good fit for younger companies in the sub-200 pallet range

We’re of the firm opinion that offering Atlanta Bulk Commodity 3PL warehouse services without opening yourself up to 3rd party audits is a big red flag

We subject ourselves to the following outside audits:

  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) Food Grade audits via the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Institute of Baking (AIB). We achieved a 960 / 1000 on our latest audit from the AIB, which puts us in the top 5% of food grade warehouses nationally and rates us on process adherence, facility quality, overall cleanliness, and robustness of our pest control program
  • HAZMAT Certifications via the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Alliance for Chemical Distribution (ACD), and Department of Transportation (DOT)

We also maintain industry and business affiliations along with continuous learning relationships with the International Warehouse & Logistics Association (IWLA), Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), the Southeast Warehouse Association (SWA), Alliance for Chemical Distribution, and local Atlanta Chamber of Commerce

Of course, we take delivery of imports from outside the US everyday and are well versed in the compliance needs across multiple verticals

We also can export manufactured goods from the United States across the globe on multiple methods of transportation including Air, Ocean, Rail, and Over the Road (OTR) freight

We don’t possess any transportation assets in-house but maintain a tight relationship with multiple freight brokers who offer great pricing on drayage, FTL, LTL, FCL, LCL, and other modes of transportation….we would be pleased to obtain competitive quotes on your behalf and coordinate all aspects of your warehousing and transportation operations

We use the Extensiv 3PL system which has a lot of great features:

  • EDI & API connections
  • eCommerce store integrations for quick implementations
  • Real-time inventory tracking

We’ve also developed in-house dock management software to book appointments, reduce dock congestion, and increase loading and unloading efficiency

Out in the warehouse, we use a mix of handheld and long distance Zebra scanners (best-in-class) to ensure product is properly tracked and accounted for as it moves in and out of the warehouse

Porter adheres to security best practices including but not limited to:

  • CCTV footage
  • Keycard access in and out
  • Visitor sign in and out
  • Employee electronic clock and out
  • Non-authorized personnel identification system including Visitor badges, color-coded warehouses vests, and more
