The Rise of India in Chemical Exports to the U.S.

If you’re a U.S.-based chemical importer, you may have been hearing about a new rising star in the global market of chemical trade: India. While China has long dominated this sphere, India is becoming a more prominent player thanks to developments such as tariff tensions, importers’ shift toward sourcing diversification, and the rapid growth of the chemical industry in India.

India is the sixth-largest chemical-producing country worldwide and the third-largest in Asia (as of December 2025), according to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF)–and considerable growth is on the horizon. India also ranks 14th in global chemical exports (when excluding pharmaceutical products).

The chemical market in India is expected to reach between $230 billion and $255 billion by 2030 (CHECK) at 8 to 9 percent CAGR. This is up from the current $155 billion to $165 billion with growth potentially outpacing the GDP growth rate. Some of the sectors that are expected to be the biggest drivers of growth are construction, semiconductors, renewables, and automotive, among others, according to McKinsey & Company.

One factor that is helping to spur growth is policy support from the Indian government–such as the “Make in India” initiative and the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP)–which are helping to encourage domestic production and increased export activities. Additionally, the Indian government has taken steps to establish petroleum, chemicals, and petrochemicals investment regions (PCPIRs) as well as plastic parks to help boost industry output in the country.

Current bright spots within India’s chemical exports include:

  • Castor oil – India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of castor oil, making up 85% to 90% of worldwide castor oil exports
  • Agrochemicals – India is the fourth largest producer of agrochemicals, producing more than 50% of technical-grade pesticides (according to IBEF’s December 2025 data).
  • DyesIndia is a major supplier of dyes, making up 16% to 18% of the global production of dyestuff and dye intermediates. India exports dye materials to more than 90 countries. 
  • Pharmaceutical intermediates – Pharmaceutical intermediates are chemical compounds that are considered the building blocks of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Drugs and pharmaceuticals have been an area of growth for Indian exports.
  • Pharmaceutical intermediates are considered the “building block” chemicals required to make the final Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API)
  • Specialty chemicals – These are chemical products that are produced in smaller batches for niche applications rather than being mass-produced for broad usage. India’s specialty chemical sector is in growth mode.
  • Organic chemicals – These include chemical products such as acetyls; benzene, toluene, and xylene derivatives; surfactants; solvents; and more.
  • Inorganic chemicals – These include chemicals such as caustic soda, soda ash, and sodium sulphate.

The “China Plus One” Strategy

For a long time, China was the go-to for imported chemical products. However, in more recent years, many U.S.-based manufacturers and chemical importers started implementing a “China Plus One” strategy, in which they seek to diversify their supply chains to include international suppliers from at least one country that is not China. Some companies have even opted to move all their sourcing to other countries.

This shift is occurring for multiple reasons, including:

  • More aggressive U.S. tariffs targeting Chinese imports, resulting in higher costs for U.S. importers.
  • Shipment bottlenecks that can occur when relying on a single sourcing hub, especially when complications arise such as geopolitical conflicts, port congestion or shut-downs, natural disasters, events like the COVID-19 pandemic, etc.).

When U.S. companies diversify their supply chains, they have the potential to:

  • Quickly mobilize a Plan B when unexpected obstacles arise
  • Minimize instances of shipment delays
  • Reduce vulnerability to geopolitical and trade risks
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings
